If your current A/C system is in limbo and you have to disassemble things, why not plan on doing it right this time - with a thorough flush (requires compressed air) of the hoses, compressor, condensor and evaporator, replacing the receiver drier and expansion valve, draw warm dry air through the reassembled system for some 30 minutes before drawing a final vacuum, then reinstall the proper amounts of R134a oil and refrigerant. You'll be pleased with the results.
If the prior mechanic did the cheap and easy conversion method (without a proper flush), that would explain the unsatisfactory results and whiny compressor. He may have even added R134a oil to the R12 oil, doubling the amount inside the system and reducing the A/C cooling efficiency. Same thing applies to the 40/60 rule of coolant/water in one's cooling system. Water is the best heat transfering medium for an engine, but will boil away without coolant. Too much coolant and you reduce the cooling system efficiency.
