Clutch on '88 Turbo?

Hey all-
Continuing the saga of my newly aquired Saab-
The clutch feels pretty shot. I have yet to really play with it, but it feels like the hydraulics are there, but the clutch itself has failed mechanically. The PO. told me that he was driving along on the highway, and "suddenly it failed."
Has anyone heard of a sudden failure like this?
I've got time to have this car off the road before winter, so I'll probably take the clutch apart to diagnose the problem.
In the meantime, I was hoping for hints or suggestions from people on here about the clutch replacement job, or the clutch itself. How hard of a job is it? I'm completely sure of my skills and tools, I've just never done a clutch on these cars before. I've got the Bently manual (just gotta remember where the heck it is), but I've found that discussing the job with others can be *much* more helpul than any repair manual.
What would people reccomend for a clutch replacement, as far as parts are concerned? Stock? Upgrade? The car is stock power-wise right now, but will not stay that way for very long. I was, in particular, looking at the kevlar kit that http://www.saabperformanceparts.com sells. Anyone got experience with that? They claim better feel, better high power grip, and longer life. Seems like a bargian for only $299, or whatever they charge.
Thanks in advance for any and all info.
