Most likely, the clutch hydraulics are giving you trouble and the clutch itself is OK. Sudden failure of the clutch may be caused by a failure of the hydraulic line between master and slave cylinders (it happened on my '88 yesterday).
Progressive/intermittent failure is usually caused by the master or slave cylinder giving out so they don't generate or hold pressure. If hydraulic (brake) fluid is leaking out the hole in the bottom of the clutch housing, then the slave cylinder is shot. If you've got no leak, then the master cylinder is probably shot. Be sure to look for excessive wear at the hole in the clutch pedal where it connects to the clevice on the master cylinder.
Replacing the clutch is a reasonable DIY job, details are in the Bentley manual. The spacer tool can be made from a length of #8 solid copper wire. You can get a stock clutch kit that includes the slave cylinder for a little more than $200. The slave cylinder by itself is nearly that much. Replacing the slave cylinder requires that the clutch be removed, so doing both at the same time is reasonable if the clutch is worn, however, Saab clutches have a very long life. The biggest challenge in replacing the clutch is getting the @#$%#@$ plastic cover off. You can bend it into a pretzel without doing any damage. Be sure to replace the clutch shaft bearing while you're at it.
The stock clutch for the turbo is fine by me. Remember, that if you beef up the power, you're asking for transmission problems.
