Synthetic oil seems superior to petro oil in every meaningful way. I logged >250k on my SPG before a cracked piston required a rebuild, with RedLine synthetic in the motor and tranny: that's >250k on the original motor, original tranny and original turbo. Service is so much easier (change the filter every 2500 to 3000 and the oil every 12,000 to 15,000), protection from oil coking is so much better. The GOOD stuff, such as RedLine, offers better protection cold or hot than petro oil. It should be mandatory for any turbo and considered for any motor, period, if there is any possibility you may decide to keep the car instead of trade it in every 3 years.
The only drawbacks are:
1. cost. Good synthetic isn't cheap. But no excellent product ever is, and the peace of mind is worth it in my opinion.
2. leaks. There are some learned people who swear, possibly with some support, that switching an old motor from petro oil to synthetic causes new leaks. I can't speak to this. My SPG had about 30,000 on it when I bought her, and I switched her to synthetic not long after that, with no real problems. Your experience may vary. But a small drip or two is perfectly acceptable in an older car, and a reasonable price to pay for better protection on those days you say "YEEHAW" and put the motor through her paces.
Log onto http://redlineoil.com and read up on the advantages of "the good stuff."
