With respect to WV... Based on how your account of how the tranny failed, there is alot more wrong with it than low oil or a bad clutch. Pinion is most likely toast. If the pinion bearing fails, gears and shafts that are not normally in contact come together and weld themselves together. If there are any salvagable parts in your tranny running it now may make them non-salvageable. Even if you are not in gear, allowing the engine to run in neutral with the clutch out allows everything in there w/the exception of the pinion shaft, pinion gear, and differential spin. Look at my page, http://www.geocities.com/notcam. The pinion bearing shown there was still operable yet I had sideways bearings and a self destructing bearing cage. The pinion shaft had about 3/4 inch play at non bearing end. Check if the metal bits on your drain plug look familiar to the ones I show. Take off the reverse plate, 5th gear/transfer case and differential access plates. Look for gears with missing teeth, obvious wreckage etc. I got away with replacing ALL bearings (check saabsite.com's tranny section for pictorial of 5 speed box with all components and prices) because I caught mine early. I doubut $500 will complete the job in your case, but the only way to know is to investigate with your eyes. I hope everything is cool, but... Let us know.
