I assume you're talking about collision and comprehensive.

In general, your insurance company will pay somewhere between wholesale and retail blue book. You can look up the Blue Book or Kelly's in the library.

If you live in a no-fault state, good luck collecting from the other person's insurance company. If you don't live in a no-fault state, see my first comment.

In the case where the other guy was totally at fault, so what. His/her insurance company will probably at best offer you half the wholesale value of the car. What can you do? You can drag them to court. Say you win. By the time you pay off the lawyer (33% -50% of award) court costs, filing costs, you're worse off. And yes, it's three years later and a good portion of your stomach lining. Worth it?

Comprehensive. Very good to keep. It tends to be cheap, and it covers smashed windshields and stolen radios. For non-total incidents, it's worth it.

Don't assume the other guy's insurance company will pay. Gee, what if they decided to drop their insurance coverage?
