I am guessing I have a bad head gasket, but wanted to run it by you folks. I get the white smoke/vapor when I first start the car and while it warms up. After run in, the smoke goes away, or at least very little after that. I do have coolant loss but no leaks under the car, so I assume it is going into the exhaust system. However my oil looks fine, no white frothiness or that sort of thing. Can you blow a head gasket so coolant only goes to the exhaust and not into the oil? Or is there another gasket to consider.
If it is a head gasket, what am I looking at for repair costs? Either in US dollars or an estimation of the shops time so I can ballpark the cost. I assume the gasket itself is insignificant ($5-$25) and the vast majority of the cost is labor. Also, if it is a head gasket and I do decide to have the work done, is there anything else to have done/checked while it is all apart that doesn't add significantly to the cost of the repair if you are in there already.
The car is a 1988 900S (US model) with just over 200k miles on it.
Thanks everyone,
Patrick
