Well I don't have the "mayonaise on the dipstick" issue, which is why I am asking here. However I do have a significant coolant loss on a weekly bases, yet no obvious puddles under the car.

> "Does the smoke smell sweet like coolant?"

I'll have to give it a good wiff later. I tend to not get in the habit of standing behind my car breathing in the exhaust! <grin>

> "Do you see bubbles in the coolant expansion cap coming from the

YES! What does it mean?

> "Are any of the plugs really clean?"

I haven't pulled any. However I have had what might be a lot of valve chatter the last couple months on what I think is the one closest to the firewall.

> "How's the car running? If idle is choppy or feels like the spark
> is being fouled, this could indicate a blown gasket."

That's the thing. Other than the mysterious loss of coolant and white smoke, the car runs fine. Even when accelerating.

This weekend, if it isn't too cold, I will go out and give the car a good once over and look for any obvious leaks, but like I said, I haven't seen any fluids under the car (besides the normal oil drips from a 14 year old car) so either there are no hose leaks, or they are more the type the only happen while you are driving (when the system is pressurized) and not when you park.

Thanks to the other people who also have replied to this. A couple quick calls around my area to some mechanics turns up an estimated repair cost of $800-$900 assuming no other problems. Ouch!
