As others have indicated, it's quite common. I did mine (head gasket replacement) and actually had fun doing it. For one, I got to clean the head for perhaps the first time in it's long life (200K miles). Cleaning away (carb cleaner and wire brush) the layered carbon buildup solved the ping problem at cruising speeds. You'll also see on the head surface where metal between the cylinder and coolant channels has corroded away. An easy fix is the JB Weld version many SAAB mechanics swear by. Other's recommend a metal braze followed by a filing and resurfacing.
