I agree with compaqted's reco and have another thought to add.
If the only ground from the batteries is to the seat belt bolt, you may have a problem. I recommend that you run another ground cable spliced to the original ground cable, which in turn goes directly to the radiator crossmember and the trans/block ground points. The body is not nearly as good a conductor as a copper cable and your alternator might be "seeing" this resistance as a false indicator of a more fully charged battery. So each day your batteries gradually go downhill until eventually dead.
Awhile back someone stated that as long as you hooked to the body, you were at ground. This is not true and there is actually a potential difference(aka voltage) between any two ground points. The idea is to minimize this potential difference. That's why ground wires go to a limited number of ground points on the car and most of these are directly connected to the battery by good conductors, copper or aluminum(head and trans case).
