Consider me biased, since I've been using and selling AMSOIL for over 25 years now, starting in a 73 Saab 99. I've changed cars over to AMSOIL with over 200,000 miles on them. If the engine is leaking now, changing to synthetic isn't likely to seal the leak--it isn't a mechanic in a can.
As pointed out, synthetic doesn't cause leaks, but it can find them if they are plugged by sludge or gunk.
In my turbos, I drain every 10,000 miles, filter change at 5,000. In my non-turbo, change every year, filter change at 6 months.
Before changing over, I recommend use of a good engine flush--best I know of are made by AMSOIL or BG. If you don't, or won't, flush, then plan to change the filter after a couple of thousand miles, and maybe drain the first batch after 3-4,000 miles. The synthetic will clean!
If you can't, or won't, get AMSOIL, Mobil 1 is an excellent second choice.
