to make your car get to running temperature quickly.. and once at running temperature keep it up there.. a faulty t-stat cannot in any way make your car get to running temperature any quicker.. the thing shuts off all flow to the radiator up to minimum running temps and then permits only just enough flow to the rad to keep the car nice and hot.. hot being somewhere near but not above the boiling point of the coolent.. one simple test saab folks never seem to mention is to remove the t-sat completely and see what happens.. with no t-stat at all your temperature gauge should barely move into the bottom of the green on your gauge if everything else is working okay..
i sometimes think folks think a t-stats job is to keep a car cool.. it isnt its to keep the thing hot.. sometimes simply removing it is the simplest test of all to check the rest of your cooling system.. basically if your car gets even vaguely hot without a t-stat there is something wrong with it.. he he he
i would guess that nine out of ten t-stats get changed when there is nothing wrong with them to be honest.. they get changed cos they are the easiest and cheapest option to go for when over-heating problems start to rear their ugly head.. and if u really do have an over-heating problem the best temperary thing to do with a t-sat is to remove it completely till u fix the real cause of the problem.. in simple terms t-stats can only ever make things hotter they can never make things cooler..
all this fitting of twin fans (aircon fans running at the same time as the proper one) and cooler running t-stats u read about is only masking other (high mileage) cooling system problems in my "humble" oppinion.. he he he.. these other cooling problems are usually duff radiators and the beginnings of head gasket failure.. whoops..
