just general crap this but i recon its relevent to some folks.. cars that have erratic temperature gauge readings have something wrong with them.. with electric fans cars should have two basic readings.. highway driveing which with a saab seems to be say 1/3 (perhaps slighlty higher in summer than winter) up the green on the temp gauge and a slighly higher reading of say 2/3 up the temp gauge which is prolonged stop/start city driveing when no air is coming thru the rad till the fan comes on.. the gap or difference between the two basic readings is so as the fan isnt running all the time during highway driveing when it isnt needed..
consistant readings being more important than the actual position on the temp guage..
in stop start driveing the fan coming on will drop the temp slighty then the fan goes off.. the temp then rises slightly till the fan cuts in again.. the general temp should always be higher than highway driveing..
basically if during highway driveing the gauge moves about a lot according to engine load or whatever it suggests your radiator aint working properly.. or the beginnings of head gasket failure.. duff t-stats will usually produce consistant temp reading even if they are the wrong ones.. they usually fail on the hotter side of things.. ie.. they fail to open enough or not at all.. but they wont sometimes work and sometimes not..
the rad should be capable of cooling things at all speeds (assuming air is blowing thru it) and the t-stat should keep the temp nice and steady at less than halfway up the gauge.. if it dosnt and the temp ever gets hot enough so as the fans come on during highway driving something is amiss..
in my experience t-stats are pretty reliable devices and dont fail often.. the older (very older) bellows type had a high failure rate but the current wax filled design dosnt.. wax-stat used to be type now its seems to be a brand name but all modern t-stats follow the same basic design i think.. wax-stat must have been the dudes who invented the idea..
gonna go against the herd with this one as well.. i dont think the idea of two fans going as opposed to one does any good either.. once that hotter 2/3 temp is reached i recon it better leaving it there than rapidly cycling it up and down.. ????.. to me its the hot cold cyling that does damage not the higher temp.. two fans will cause more of this than one..
