Depends....
If the top radiator hose did not become hot by feel when the guage went high, then look to the t-stat...if the hose was hot and the fans did not come on then look to the fan temp switch and the time delay off relay.
To change the t-stat just drain the radiator down with the cap off the fill reservoir so that the radiator portion of the water system dumps most of the water out of the t-stat housing/connection hose. The engine will still have water in it. Then unbolt the two t-stat housing bolts and slip out the old t-stat with its rubber seal and install the new t-stat with a
new seal. If the t-stat has a small gravity purge port in it, point this port toward the front of the car. Then rebolt up the housing, close the radiator drain, and refill the reservoir. Bleed the t-stat housing of trapped air by opening the bleed nipple on top of the housing. The water level in the reservoir as air is bled out so you refill as needed. Run the car and rebleed the nipple a couple of times as the air within the system gets trapped here when the water circulates. Check for leaks.
