Just my .02, but after i put in 82 degree thermostat and fan switch my car ran MUCH smoother and quieter, so much so that i was surprised at the difference.
I'm not saying that you want you car to operate below the green zone, but i believe that lower readings in the green zone are better. I replaced my temp switch because the fans were coming on late and as a result the temp guage would get up to 3/4 or so in city driving, so my comparison is from hearing the engine with the guage at 3/4 and (now) hearing it at with the guage at 1/2.
Sorry we got off topic from your original post, but i would check the thermostat (feeling the hose from thermostat housing to the radiator once the temp guage reaches 1/2 way is a good test) as well as making sure your fans cylce on at an appropriate time.
Whether the t-stat bad or the fans coming on late, both are easy jobs (and CHEAP... each part $6-8 from sponsors), even for the novice do-it-yourselfer!
