The sliding yoke you refer to is the common cause of the pre 88 front brake brake clunk when applying the brakes in reverse. It will not contribute to the looseness you describe when pulling the wheel back and forth. It is possible that the nut on the lower ball joint stud has loosened, and tightening it will cure your clunk. Possible, but not likely. If there is movement in the ball joint itself, it is shot. Another cause of the type of movement you describe could be a loose center nut on the CV shaft allowing bearing movement.
