Jim,

Although i was there and saw it with my own eyes, i'll be you are correct (as i'm getting better, but still not too good at all of this DIY stuff!!) After a project is done and successful i feel i can do almost anything on the car, but when i go to confirm a diagnosis and leave the car no wiser than when i started, i realize just how much more i have to learn.

What it appeared to be though is that the nut connecting the lower ball joint to the swivel member was moving; but to be honest, it was hard to REALLY see/hear where the noise was even coming from. Is it possible that this threaded bolt end of the ball joint does indeed move, but not because the nut isn't tight enough, but because there is "play" in the ball joint itself (and therefore the nut side would be able to move the same amount as the space that now exists between the ball and the socket).

As said above i tested first w/o the wheel on and couldn't hear/see any movement, so i was already a little upset at this point for wasting so much time (AND the project started with a "simple" problem getting at the jack under the spare... the nut that the spare's securing bolt screws into came undone from its body location, so unscrewing the bolt just made the whole thing spin including the nut... another 45 minutes wasted).

I think i will just try to replace the ball joint and hope the clunk goes away... as i hear the noise when i shake the wheel not only up and down, but also left and right. Can i replace just one? I know the above poster said that when one needs replacing they are all ready to be replaced, but money is tight right now so i'm trying to save where i can without being foolish (and only replace when i have to). However, my safety (and my new bride's) is of much greater importance to me than a few dollars. Should they all be replaced, or is it safe to replace only one at a time (when they clunk). I don't see any indication that there is a problem with the others.

It also appears that there is more than one way to do this, as Townsend's site talks about removing the axle bolt and Bentley suggests removing the lower shock from it's mount. I'm thinking the shock method seem easier, and if i do it that way, i'll probably by a lower shock bushing to replace during the repair, as it just seems to make sense if i'm tackling the lower shock bolt anyway (and that's another potential source for a clunking noise... although the shock doesn't move at all when tested).

As always, thanks again for you help, adivce, and asistance. I look forward to reading your thoughts on the above.
