Clunk... ball joints or this sliding yoke thing (pic)

Today i decided to take a closer look once again. I jacked up the car, this time with spacers b/w the upper control arm and the body, and when i shook the rotor/caliper area it didn't shake at all. However, once i put the tire/wheel back on i get a little movement. The movement appears to be coming from the lower ball joint, althought the joint section doesn't appear to be moving... just the big bolt/nut that sits under the CV joint boot (hope i got that right). It almost seems that if you tightened the nut more the movement would stop. Is this indeed a ball joint gone bad?
As i didn't realize this movement 'til the end, i explored the brake area a bit more hoping to the find source of clunk. It appears that the sliding yoke (don't know if i got the part correct, but i'm refering to the entire horseshoe thing that encircles the rotor and caliper... see pic below or link if pic doesn't show) has some movement, and will make a clunk noise if shaken as it hits the metal behind it. How is this piece held in place? I looked for bolts but couldn't find any. Seems like it is only held in place by the ring/clip that i marked in the picture, and this ring is not securely in place (if it is indeed supposed to be lie snug). What is this piece, and is it ok if it doesn't fit flush with all its surroundings? Could my ball joint actually be good and the clunk is from this?
Any thoughts on the clunk given the above info? Anything i need to know before i attack this project... probably going to attempt this holiday weekend.
Can i just replace one ball joint? If not, can i do just one side of the car, or should they be done in pairs of lowers/uppers?
Thanks for any comments.
