Check out the drawing in Tom Townsend's site (link below). Just like you said, the play is between the ball & the socket. Thats how they wear out. The "threaded bolt end" IS the ball, & if it's loose in the socket then you need to replace the ball joint. Tightening the nut just below the CV boot can't do anything about that. Its not likely that nut itself is loose & the tapered stud is rattling around in the steering knuckle. The ball & socket itself can't be tightened. They wear out because they are the pivots for the suspension & steering. They are constantly moving around as you drive.
You're spending more time worrying about it than you would changing the BJ.
I usually undo the axle nut as well as the shock mount so I can swing the steering knuckle out. That way I don't have to worry about pulling the driveshaft out of the inner driver. I usually also take the caliper off the steering knuckle just to give me more room. Make sure you don't yank on the brake hose. You can ruin it even if it looks OK...
If you only replace the one ball joint, you just risk having to do it over again before long. If you take it to a mechanic, you get to pay the labor charge all over again. If you do it yourself you get to explain to your new bride why you're spending another afternoon in the garage when you could be, ummm... doing something else.
