Shocks - top nut tightening

Ok, I replaced my rear shocks w/o any real problems. The Boge Turbos -(SOBSTORY)are a huge improvement over my dead shocks.
Now I want to think about tackling the front pair. I know how to get them off, but I'm worried about the installation --> tightening the top nut on the driver's side.
I been reading posts about this particular challenge, but I haven't seen any solutions mentioned that I understand, except something about a special Lisle socket. What's that?
When installing the rear shocks, I attached a needlenose vicegrip just above the topnut to keep the shaft from spinning. That technique will probably work on the front passenger side, but not the driver's side.
Unless I get a better idea, I'm thinking of making a 1" incision in the plastic sheath, inserting my vicegrip and clamping down on the shaft. Then I could use a socket to turn the top nut. When it's tight I'd remove the vicegrips from the shaft, and place a bandage around the incision made out of metal tape.
What do you think?
Thanks, Chris
