This got me thinking. The first time I did fronts they tightened just fine. The latest (on my current '90 SPG) they were a bear and I had to grind the tip into a 1/4" square and fit a socket to keep it from spinning. It sucked. While reading your post I wondered if the suspension or shock bottom couldn't be jacked up until there is enough resistance to overcome the tendency to spin the shock.
