engine bearings?

Where are these "main and rod" bearings?
I was thinking about doing the headgasket as well. I don't know what sort of damage that persistant leaky waterpump did but I do know that a bunch of coolant boiled off. Does a new head gasket REQUIRE the head being resurfaced?
How hard are these things - RS you must know by now that I'm mostly a hack. I don't trust myself to line things up properly. Do the bearings need to be pressed in?
btw, do you have an engine stand or are you planning on using a lot of cardboard boxes?
I've also thought about shooting a little rubberized underbody coating over any little rust bubbles I see in the engine compartment - barbaric I know but I fugure it will keep the water out.
