you listen to in the car. Are you looking to "impress the neighbors", or would you prefer good sound quality?
I've built my audio system with sound quality in mind, and have a/d/s/ and Rockford Fosgate amplifiers. The power ratings aren't very impressive (a/d/s/-4x25w, R-F-2x30w) but are measured in RMS (root-mean-square) watts and have very low THD (total harmonic distortion). I use them to drive Boston Acoustics 4" rally components in the front, Boston Acoustics 5.5" 2-ways in the rear armrests, and a/d/s/ 8" subs in a small sealed box behind the rear seats. (This is in an '86 SPG, by the way...) The head unit is a crappy panasonic CD deck whose best feature is its front/rear/sub pre-amp outputs.
It is just loud enough to be heard clearly at 80mph with the windows and sunroof open, but will rock your world while parked. This illustrates an important concept- "Signal to Noise ratio." The "signal" is the music, and the "noise" is any other sound.
The job of an amp is to increase the "signal" without adding additional noise. Every piece of audio equipment adds some noise, but some add much more than others. While driving, there is ambient noise (rubber on pavement, engine noise, wind noise, other traffic, etc...)
You want to be able to amplify your speakers enough to overpower the noise without adding additional noise (distortion). The trade-off is that amplifiers which are cleaner (less distorted) and more powerful tend to be expensive, big, heavy, and will place large demands on your car's electrical system.
Listen to everybody's opinion here on saabnet, but do some research elsewhere and form an opinion of your own. Spend some time shopping before buying anything. Remember- those eBay auctions that say: "2000 watt amp- $99.00" aren't exactly explaining how that power rating was calculated...
