RS,
You are nothing if not thorough!! Again, you're something....
Okay, the only questions I can answer right now are these: First, it DOES crank quickly and you think it is going to start. Every once in a while, though, I'm not sure how to put this in words - not very good ones like you do at least - it kind of "runs over" when it starts. Sort of still cranks/turns over for a second or two while started. Does that make any sense to you? Let's see...your other questions: terminals HAVE been brushed and cleaned, no new eqipment of ANY kind added on. And, no I don't have a multitester: is it something a normal guy can learn to use quickly? I could get one. Also, I can go to AutoZone and let them REtest the battery and alternator numbers...after all, I bought this battery from them only about 8 or 10 weeks ago tops.
The bizarre thing is that I have a feeling there are actually TWO problems here. I think the "dead zone" problem (the OPPOSITE of the current cranking over and over without starting) is a separate issue. No reason to base that on except being a 40 year old lifetime Saab owner since my 1973 99. Does this sound like a starter problem to you?? Is this what starters do when they are on their deathbed? (smile) Also, the square metal (?) ignition lock relay is original I think. Does it do anything that might dovetail with these problems? I also think you may be right on with the idea that something else is draining the battery and I don't know what. Those same mechanics on North Ave. laughed at me when I suggested going over the electrical system. I know wire-by-wire ain't the most pleasant thing. You may have something with this ground cable idea. Is it easy to detect the small cable that connects the alternator case to the ground point on the inner fender? Is it any special color? I'll certainly check that. Again, thanks for the expertise. For what it's worth, I pay extra to have AAA Plus, so that I get free towing for longer distances. Hate to even go there.
Well, thanks VERY MUCH once again. I appreciate it. I'll look for your reply tomorrow....it's almost 1am.
take care,
Martin
