Gees, if it cranks fast then the battery should have good charge. You can get a cheapie digital multitester at an AutoZone for under $20 or so (at least that's what I remember from a quick glance last week). They're pretty stratighforward to use - on the cheapies, you turn the dial to the type of measurement and range you want and put the leads on the points you want to measure between.
From what you describe, I'm starting to think that you might have a couple of things going on:
- the ignition switch might be a little dodgy. Assuming a good charge, you should get dash lights when you turn the key on. And the key might not return from the START position as fast as it needs to let the starter stop. The starter on my '89 SPG overruns a bit, too. But it's done that for the last 4 years without giving it's last gasp.
- you might have an ignition module that is on it's last legs.
If I weren't helping a friend with his A/C tomorrow, i'd say let me drive down and take a look at it. I have heaps of parts in my garage (packrat par excelence). Drop me an email, if the A/C project doesn't take long, I may be able to take a quick look at it. I'm not too far (Northlake).
