Your rack might be bad given the one side only symptom, especially if the sensation is almost "skipping/slipping." You can probably rule out the ujoints in the column by pulling the boost at the firewall and heating the joint up with a hair dryer for 5 minutes or so. If this column joint is gummed up the problem should go away. If not, I'd suspect the rack.
I do not think that the problem is the suspension balljoints, but I would inspect the suspension components and tie-rods anyway. If you need a new rack, now is a good time to address any of these items.
