Just been thru 2 rack replacements in last year (two cars).
One car had a symptom I could never figure out. Turning just a bit to the right, it steered very stiff, then snapped and worked OK. Replaced some bad ball joints, etc, but that symptom persisted. Finally, the rack turned into a gusher, so it was time for a new rack. Upon removing the rack, I discovered that the ball joints that connect the actual moving rack piece to the tie rods were stuck with icky sticky dried up grease. (Hope I used the right words, but this is the ball joint that is under the steering rack rubber boot.)
It was very difficult to flex the tie rods on the old rack.
To test, you'd need to remove a tie rod end from the steering knuckle and the flex the joint around. It smooth, great. If it's sticky, you'll know it.
