It's NOT common for the brake light to be faulty. You should open the cap on the reservoir and check the fluid. Sometimes the fluid goes low on only one side of the reservoir; there is a divider between the front and rear of the reservoir. If the fluid is low, you might be suffering from a leak. The leak could even be in the braking system and the clutch just happened to show problems from air first. Or you might just need new brakes (the fluid has been diplaced into the brake pistons). But most likely there is some leak in the clutch system. It might be as easy as a leaking hose from the reservoir to the master cylinder. Do some thorough scouting. With some searching of this board, you should be able to find a bleeding procedure for the clutch. It does not sound like you're going to have an expensive fix here, unless you find the slave cylinder is leaking and you end up putting in a new clutch while replacing it.
