Brian,
If your problem is in the selector mechanism, anything you can fix is outside the trans, i.e. the rubber coupling near the firewall or something under the console. There is nothing inside that will come apart eliminating the ability to engage 1st-4th gears that I can think of. You may have bent both forks but it is unlikely you will get a worthwhile fix w/o a teardown of the trans. As far as using the 85 gearbox, it's easier to drop the front hydraulic mount in the chassis and leave the 85 transmission's front cover as that gearbox has an extra bearing and shaft extension on the lower input gear. Maybe you can just pull the bearing off and leave the shaft unsupported but you may run afoul of the lube tube arrangement. Less headache, especially since the 85 trans is an unknown quantity.
