Older jap cars are a dime a dozen, like Honda Civic's, toyota Corollas, Nissan Sentra's etc. One of these cars is reasonably reliable...about as reliable as a $500 car will be! But run it for a few months, scrap it or sell it, and then next year buy a new one. May people in New England keep one of these cars in the back yard for snow season, and regester it only during the winter months.
I live in Virginia, which hardly sees the snow New England sees, but I've got an old Chevette that serves this need. I drive it on cold moringings instead of subjecting my SAAB to warm'up times, and short trips to the grocery or something. I of course also is the one driven when the weather turns icy. My neighbor gave me the car after it was sitting in his backyard for 2 years. It needed tires and a battery, and has been a nice investment to keep the SAAB in nice shape. It also servers as a "parts chaser" when the SAAB is out of service for repairs. I can hop in this car and make a run to the parts shop
