So you're saying that instead of touching the meter's negative lead to the negative battery post i should have just touched it to a piece of metal under the hood?

Guess i should be thankful it was only a cheapie Home Depot model :)

My seatbelts are manual (not 'automatic'), my guess is it's the alarm system as the red lcd in the dash speaker grill isn't working as it should. I've unplugged the connector that goes into the alarm's black box under the rear seat... do you know if this sufficiently 'shuts off' the alarm system.

Also, am i 'safe' with just the negative battery lead disconnected right now (or do i also need to disconnect the positive lead... just trying to save an extra step when i have to reconnect)

Not much i can do until i get another meter?
