go to radio shack & get a $30 digital meter, and a 1 ohn 50 watt resistor. Unhook the neg batt lead, jumper the resistor between the lead and the batt terminal. Set your meter to Volts, preferably the 1 or 2 volt range, and clip it across the resistor. Eliminates the prob w the interior lights, etc, and protects the meter.
And: using the volt function you can calculate the current draw.
E=IR
E= volts, I=current in amps, R=resistance in ohm.
1 volt across a 1 ohm resistor = 1 amp current draw
.1 volt across a 1 ohm resistor = .1 amp.
quick and dirty Ohms law: cover the value you want to find to get the correct equation.
example: I (current in Amps) = E (volts) devided by R (resistance in ohms)
E
-----
I | R
