Hi all. My trusty 87 8-valve is slow as a turtle but has handily gotten me to 322K miles (albeit with many front caliper changes!). I found a used 91 900 16 valve non turbo a few years ago with 114K on it that was in need of a few things and fixed it up. The idea was to use the 91 as a replacement for the aging 87 which has served me well. The thing is, every time I think the 91 is running well and I take it on a few hour highway trip, something seems to go wrong. Here are the major repairs that have been done so far to the 91:

- head gasket
- front rotors
- Right inner driver and axle
- Rear engine seal and oil pump seal
- New AMM
- Hydraulic engine mounts replaced

At this time I have two symptoms that I'm very concerned about:

1. The car will occasionally start shuddering violently after a few hours of highway driving, on accelerating only, and only if there is a full load of people or gear in the car. I was sure this was the inner driver vibration problem coming back, but my mechanic can't find any play in either inner driver (and besides, I just did the right one 10K ago). I haven't been able to reproduce this problem for the mechanic, and I fear that it may only happen on hot summer days--so this is "hanging over my head" now. The other thing I notice (all the time) is that my shifter vibrates/buzzes mostly in 3rd gear, but also in 5th. I was told that the new engine mounts would cure this but they had no effect. Could it be possible that this engine has an internal vibration (crank shaft or something) that is going to cause a major failure soon?

2. The tranny has a slight whine in 5th gear. If this were a reliable car I'd not hesitate to get the tranny rebuilt if necessary, but #1 above worries me

I might add that my 87 8 valve has the original tranny and engine including original head gasket in it, all working flawlessly. This car has been a work horse, carrying tons of windsurfing gear on highway trips all over the place. Right now my gut is saying get rid of the 91 and keep maintaning the 87...but that seems kind of crazy with the 200K mileage difference between them! But honestly, I'm hesitant to load up the 91 with gear or people and go anywhere.

So any thoughts on my 91's vibration, or the reliability of the 2.1 liter 91 N/A engine? Thanks.
