Though at the moment I think I'd trade my 1990 16v for any good 8v that comes without rust. Eight valves are so easy to work on, and frankly I don't notice any difference in power. My old '87 8v ran a lot better than a friend's 1990 16v, and it probably ran better than my current 16v. It just seems there's always something with these 16v machines, either AMM or ECU or oxygen sensor or blahblah and it's always expensive. I'd swap an 8v engine in two hours or so, with a 16v there's a lot more attached, though I haven't tried yet.
But just compare the elegant simplicity of the CIS to the absurd complexity of the LH and you know what I mean. They always started right up, too, just a touch of the key, a 16v always takes three turns of the engine.
It does look better in the engine bay, that black 16v valve cover. And yes, eight valves are slow. But compare your rpm's at 70 mph. I'm sure I did 2500 at 70 in that silly saab 90 I had (ugliest car in the world, easily) ,now it's almost at 3000. Hey, that's supposed to be progress, more HP and so on! And I do almost only highway stretches! I don't get better mpg either. If it didn't LOOK so good (burgundy red, red cloth interior), I'd be selling my car today. Maybe...
