IIRC I used a dremel tool and cut the pigtails..I suspect they could have been cut with a diag cutter too. Remove the old brushes.
Then use a soldering GUN. Preferably a Weller 325-500W but one of their smaller ones will work on the high setting. I dunno why everyone who does any automotive soldering at all doesn't have one of these (I also have an electronic temp controlled soldering iron for electronic stuff).
Anyway, you heat the contacts with the gun and shake the molten solder out...the excess pigtail should come out or you may have to hold the nub with a needlenose and heat the contact and shake the thing out.
Run the pigtails up and solder them to the contacts. If they're too long you may need to trim them but remember the contacts have to wear down to about 5mm and still extend beyond the housing 1-2mm to touch the slip rings so make sure you leave enough pigtail to allow the brushes to drop.
First time I did it took 1/2 and hour including picking out the tools and soldering gun. I bet I could do it in ten if I did one right after the first one, but loss of learning being what it is it would probably take me 20 minutes if I had to do it again.
I got my brushes from a BMW dealer, incidentally. All the bosch alternators apparently take the same brushes.
