I did tear up a brand new set of seals in the master cylinder once by applying too much pressure on the brake reservoir end. Had to rebuild the master cylinder again. Last week I used a hose clamp to clamp the open end of a vinyl (yellow) kitchen glove to the reservoir, and another hose clamp on a bicycle pump after cutting off one of the finger tips, and was able to apply appropriate pressure by pumping into the glove, and then squeezing the glove.
Did have to pump the clutch pedal, and bleed the clutch twice before the clutch engaged correctly.
This was after I replaced the fluid line between the master and slave from a salvage yard because mine had rusted through! Keep things clean under the hood to avoid stuff like that...
good luck -
