If the tires are in good shape, it's no problem. If the tires are 50% gone, there will be a tendency to occasionally throw a stud, but that happpens even if they've been studded since day one. I have had tires studded after one season w/o studs and had no problems.
The tire guys don't like to stud tires anymore(resembles work) and will come up with all sorts of reasons why they can't do it. It is a pita since each stud has to be shot into the tire with an air gun and the air gun feed mechanism is not 100% so there are alot of "blanks."
You can get Hakkas studded right from the distributor so the retailer doesn't have to screw around with studding.
