I had the engine on my 87 900T rebuilt when I replaced the trans at 192K miles. I wish I had done the head (ported, etc) at the time, but at 270K the valves are still sealing so I just missed a power opportunity rather than a durability increase.
I replaced the mains and cons and piston rings...the original bores still showed crosshatch marks. Is true...very good metal in ole's svedish blocks!
I can recommend replacing the timing chain and timing chain tensioner/rub blocks, upgrade to latest available config that fits your engine. Remarkably quiet.
Now is the time to replace your driver's side upper a-arm bushings with engine out of the car...150K and older car IS TIME. I'd replace the engine mounts too. Consider having the oil pump O-rings replaced if not the engine harmonic balancer. Make sure you replace all the seals on the engine if not the freeze plugs too.
