1. Make sure both front calipers are not hanging up and the slides are properly lubricated. Age doesn't matter here, lube up the pins.
2. Check the pads for heat glazing. If one caliper had been sticking prior to replacement it could've overheated the pad material, changing its friction properties. It could get grabby, it could "fade" or it could act normally. I've read a report about a freight train that ran away because of this (extremely cold weather, crew was trying to keep the coupler slack run out, pulled with the brakes applied for two miles, pads overheated and glazed, train lost braking ability downhill, big big big mess o' mangled coal cars to clean up.)
3. Bleed fresh brake fluid through the entire system to prolong the life of everything involved. That means all four calipers and the clutch slave. It's quick.
4. Do the ANTI-LOCK or BRAKE FLUID lights light up? Do they stay on? If they don't light up, whoever sold you the car pulled the bulbs to hide a larger problem. If they do light up and shut off slowly, it's time for new brake fluid (see 3). If they come on while driving, either you need brake fluid (BF light), the ABS is offline (ANTI-LOCK light), or there is a major fault in the system (both on steady while driving).
Yeah, they're pretty expensive, but sturdy when maintained with fresh fluid. I'd recommend a junkyard or eBay or Saabnet classified if you can get one from there. New they're $1500. Ouch.
