As an exceedingly proud owner of an '88 900S (non-turbo) I can empathize with your want to reburbish the old girl. Mine has 328k miles and a growing number of unattended "blemishes": seats don't heat, A/C is long gone... I recently ripped out the sagging headliner because it was obstructing my view and I was tired of warning passengers in the rear to beware of stray pushpins. The right front has a slight ding from the night I killed Bambi, and rust spots are growing in all the usual spots-- lower door panel, fender peak, etc.
Do I have an occaisonal urge to refurbish it to showroom condition? Sure, but only when I'm huggin' drunk ("I love you guys"). In the morning I walk to the garage, smile at my baby, fire it up and go to work and we both love the still-solid ride. I'll do the repairs nec to keep that happy feeling but when she blows a head gasket or otherwise breaks a hip, it'll be time to shop.
My 2 cents: Drive and care for your present car til she drops, use the money you would have put into restoration to secure an SPG whose revival would actually mean something. Oh yeah, and screw the 0X'ers driving their plastic cashmobiles.
