I inspected the pilot bearing before reassembly, it was smooth to rotate and didn't have a lot of free play in it. I assumed it was fine, and I still assume that it is.
When I say the clutch is worse now than it was before, I'm not making any direct comparisons. The old clutch didn't slip, but it grabbed really high and I got really tired of it progressively getting higher and higher. The new clutch grabs....low (to say the least) and it does not fully disengage. I say its "worse" because of the difficulty in shifting and the extra wear it is subjecting my 'war veteran' of a gear box.
I prefer a clutch that grabs as low as possible.
I guess I should be careful what I wish for, It grabs so low now I can barely disengage it!
About the worn pedal ideas:
This is great, I'm very anxious to get out to the parking lot and see what I can find. Maybe everything worked fine with the old worn out clutch but the overall clutch system isnt in good enough shape to work with all brand new components.
about the saab tool pressure plate insertion:
I dont have the tool, I made one out of wire and it sucked. I didn't even use it to put the new one back in because the new pressureplate is an aftermarket one and doesnt have the same tab system....as you are probably visualizing now, this was a difficult task for me. If I can't fix this issue and it looks like I have to take everything back out...I'll be quite unpleased and probably lose interst in my car for a while. :-(
I'll inspect the pedal, bleed the master as outlined, pressure bleed the entire system, and report back the results.
