Along the lines of what Jordan was saying Posted by RS [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Clutch drags after replacement, AP, Mon, 7 Feb 2005 19:58:18 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
When I bleed the hydraulics after they have been empty, it sometimes takes two pints of brake fluid to get all of the air out of the system.
If the master cylinder is good, you should be able to open up the slave bleeder nibble and get a dribble of fluid out of it just by gravity.
Sometimes, the spring in the master cylinder that pushes the piston back to the rest position, is weak or broken, or there's a ring of varnish around the rear opening of the master cylinder. When any of those happens, the piston can't go back to the rest position and the front seal obstructs the opening that lets the fluid into the master. If it's old enough that the seals would be worn, the master cylinder won't be able to replenish the fluid and air gets into the clutch hydraulic. I fought with that for around a year until I rebuilt the master in my '89. Not a single clutch-related problem since then.
That's the long way of saying that you might want to rebuild or replace the master cylinder if the clevis pin hole in the clutch pedal isn't worn. (Gotta go and get another cup of coffee after all that ;-)
