DESPERATE! car starts but won't rev

Our "good" 93 is in the shop for a headgasket, so our old '89 has of course chosen this moment to start acting up.
When I start it, it catches just fine, revs briefly but tapers off, refusing to take the throttle, and the idle gets slower and slower until it dies, exactly as if it were getting no gas. If I restart it two or three times, and play with the throttle, it will eventually catch and then runs completely normally, in traffic and on the freeway, until I next have to restart it.
I could live with that, but the bad thing is, it seems to be getting worse - with each restart it takes longer and longer, more fiddling with the throttle and more restarts, before it will catch, so each time I shut it down I have to wonder if it will ever start again.
This behaviour did coincide with a cold snap (15-20F), but the car acts the same regardless of whether it is warmed up or not or how long it has been sitting. Oh and it started happening shortly after I replaced the fuel filter, though I cannot find any leaks or anything that might explain it.
Any tips? If I can just keep it running for a couple more days the other car will be done.
