Air Mass Meter Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Uhmmm... what is an AMM?, kyle morley, Tue, 22 Feb 2005 10:04:43 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The Air Mass Meter measures, well, the mass of air coming into the engine. It schedules all the fuel for the engine, and if it isn't working, the engine doesn't know that you're pressing the gas, pretty much.
Follow the really fat air intake hose from the air filter. You'll come to a silvery box in-line with that really fat hose. It also has an electrical connector. That's the AMM. Basically, if appreciable amounts of air can get into the throttle AFTER the AMM, the engine doesn't know about it, and there won't be any more fuel added when you press the gas - so it won't rev. Make sure the hose isn't split, or isn't leaking large amounts of air. Otherwise I'd suspect the AMM.
Be warned, there are different AMMs for different years, and they look alike. The key is the last three digits of the part number. When replacing the AMM, MAKE SURE that you get the same 'dash number'. So the AMM from an '86 may look similar, and will physically fit, but won't work.
