Current thinking here is that the fuel pressure is low at startup due to maybe a bad check valve or something - system has to run long enough to build pressure before the injectors will open reliably.
This would explain why mine starts well cold - on a real cold start, the various cold enrichment devices may be providing enough fuel to keep the engine running long enough for the pump to fully pressurize the system.
This is just a hypothesis at this point since a snowstorm yesterday dumped a foot of snow on us and it's just too hard to work on it until it warms/clears up a bit.
But the first step in diagnosing such probs on a injected engine is usually to put a fuel pressure guage on it and see what is happening inside - did either of your experts do so?
