I've had a lot of Saabs- starting with a 1972 99- which, compared to every other 4 door sedan in the 1970's, was legitimately awesome. Wherever it is now I bet it's still awesome.

I was slightly skeptical about the 900 but became totally sold after three excellent 900T's (one '79, two 83's). When the first SPG came out in '96 ('95?) I wanted one but the it wasn't until 1992 that I finally bought one- a "left-over" '91 beryl green. It proved to be the best car I've ever owned. I still have her.

I laid many, many mods on the car but she just ran and cranked and ran. Four years ago at 226,500 miles I put the key in my pocket, changed the oil, and just left the car in a barn in coastal Maine. She's been sitting there cold since then. So last night, I blew up the tires, charged her battery, fired her up, and then outlaw-drove her all over the peninsula. Jesus... the exhaust dropped on the road but other than that she ran just as if I'd parked her last night. And she ran well...

And I reminded myself of what is quintessential about the 900SPG: the body shell is tight and stiff, the SPG suspension is perfectly suited to bring the best out of the chassis, and that two liter engine is the best F-ing engine that anyone ever built anyhwere- especially with the Mitsu turbo. I wish my Viggen were half the car... and I like the Viggen.

Somebody needs to build a car like this again.

Dan
