My intrigue with Saab 900 started with 3 encounters. 1. A Saab 2.0litre 16V turbo engine that I saw in a display at the Smithsonian Museum when I was 15 years old. 2. Reading one of James Bond novels. I thought he only drove Lotus Esprit Turbo. I didn't know his favorite was the Silver Beast (Saab 900 Turbo). BTW, kinda silly, but I named myself James, after James Bond, when I came to the States in 1980. As a kid, I was a big fan. 3. A Rose quartz 8v 1982 Saab 900 turbo for $2000 that I reaaaaallly wanted, but didn't get back in 1990. My friends in highschool were all car enthusiasts and we all loved the SPG when it debuted in 1985.
Turn the clock forward to 2003. I kind of forgot about Saabs since then. But I was reawakened. I came accross a rusty '88 SPG with 230k miles. But it was a Saab master mechanics car that had been tuned and most major components updated. It had sweet handling, euphoric turbo spool sound, and very quick. (I find this common in all mechanics car. The mechanics of the car is awesome, but inside is trashed, heh heh this was no exception.) But I LOVED THIS CAR THE MOST out of every car I've ever owned (I changed cars about once every other year on the average). BUT, after one month of love, the car got rear ended. I AM STILL HEART BROKEN. I bought the car back from insurance and still have it, as parts car. But since then, I went on a binge to find the same car. I bought and still have 8 SPG's, including '91 red SPG (1 of 40) and '91 Green SPG (1 of 107), and 5 turbo convertibles, including a SiS copy. 'But I still haven't found what I am looking for...' I ended up settling with a black '90 SPG that has some mods, but is sitting on my driveway with busted throw out bearing. Can't wait to get that car back on the road again. (I still have the other C900's.) I may hold the record of possessing the most number of SPG's and C900 convertibles as a private owner. (I have to sell the ones that I don't want, but I just don't have the heart to sell them just yet.) Anyways, that is my story. Thanks...
3 things I like most about SPG's (C900)...
1. Euphoric turbo spool sound (Newer Saabs don't have this)
2. Absolutely gorgeous body line from all angles (Saw a very rusty pre '85 900 turbo this morning. I was staring at it until it went out of sight.)
3. None like it! (Especially in Mid-Michigan.)
