I've NEVER tapped in brake pads!! Even with a serious ridge on the outer diameter of the rotor, the pistons should retract enough to clear the rotor. It sounds like you've done this before on the car and just had a problem this time so I might be telling you stuff you already know.
On 88 and newer Saabs, the rear calipers/pistons are adjusted/retracted by removing the plug on the inside of the caliper and backing off the adjustment screw inside...push the pistons back until the new pad can be inserted. If the new pad can't be inserted easily, something is wrong and the caliper may have to be disassembled (remove the pistons) and clean it out and reseal (new seals, dust boot).
