You don't really need the special tool. If you have a bicycle bottom bracket tool, that would work. A lot of guys have reported good success using needle-nose pliers to turn the pistons. IIRC, the technique is turn the piston a bit - push in - turn it again - push in - etc.
As far a damage goes, if they didn't try so hard to compress it with a C-clamp that it damaged the threads, it should be OK.
If you're in some part of the country where rust isn't a big issue and E-brakes work well, you're probably good to go as far as doing a DIY.
There are a few good DIY sites for the early caliper style.
