I recently did a caliper rebuild because of a failing parking brake mechanism on the left side. On the car are 87 calipers with vented rotors plus the 87 steering knuckle and hub as well. The car is an 82 and when I decided to upgrade to the 87 calipers I first tried to connect the 87 calipers to the older 82 steering knuckle, but the calipers rubbed against the rotors. So that told me I needed the 87 steering knuckles as well. For the recent rebuild I opted to use two good used calipers and combine whatever parts were necessary to rebuild two good ones using all 4 caliper parts. The good used calipers were from an 86, my reasoning being that I was only after the internal parts. With all the parts removed from both the 86 and 87 calipers, I determined there was no difference between all the parts. So the incompatibility between the 87 vented rotor brake system and the older 82 is the steering knuckle, and not the calipers themselves as far as fit and function goes. However, the yoke from the 87 caliper can only be used on the 87 caliper, and the 86 and older yoke can only be used with the 86 and older calipers because of different yoke width.
That the pistons won't adjust (assuming they did it right) tells me that there might be some corrosion along one or both of the piston surfaces that comes in contact with the caliper o-ring seals.
If you have to replace the inner pistons with good used parts, you'll be fine with any year combination, so long as you keep the left and right parking brake mechanism orientation intact. No swapping sides, in other words.
None of the caliper work was complicated other than removing them from the steering knuckle with the appropriate sized socket and drive. I think I used a deep 3/4 socket with 1/2 drive breaker bar. Then there's plugging the fluid lines. I posted more on this topic a few weeks back if you think any of it might be useful.
